Burger King will hook you up with a free Whopper if you drop 10 of your friends on Facebook. Wait, what?
I haven't thought about this all that much, but I don't really get it. Does Burger King benefit from people dropping friends on Facebook? Does Facebook benefit from people dropping friends? Is this a carefully disguised attempt to lower the database load on Facebook? ;)
But seriously.. what?!
"While Burger King’s effort is mostly about quick hit marketing and getting some press (result: success!), they might actually be onto something. As our networks on social networking sites grow and grow with people we barely know, the value of them deteriorates – to the point that removing 10 “friends” for a free sandwich actually seems like a reasonable proposition."
...reasonable, to say the least. Apparently as of this morning, 50,000 friends have already been casually sacrificed, all in the name of flame-broiled fast food. Mmm.
